The true benefits of parents sleeping through the night

We all know how great it can feel to get a good night’s sleep, right? We feel so deeply for our children and want what’s best for them. That includes the right amount of sleep. It stresses you out to know your child may be getting too little sleep. I know this because you are here, reading about sleep. It can feel like a never ending cycle of no sleep, especially when you are in it. This can cause habits to form that may put a bandaid on the issue, but they still may not be sleeping great overall.

But what about us? What about parents getting enough sleep? Why is it important for us to get sleep too? Have you felt so tired that you put your phone in the fridge, or two different shoes on? Forget taking a shower and getting yourself put together! It is important for the mere fact that in order to take good care of these children, they need us to have cognitive function. We need rest for that.

When we sleep, our brains declutter, organize and create long term memories. If we aren’t getting enough deep sleep, your brain doesn’t have a chance to do this. You can feel foggy, confused, depressed, and forgetful. Is it important for parenting and also for long term health that you get enough sleep. There is a reason they say that you can’t pour from an empty cup. I know when I was sleep deprived I had a short fuse. I would get frustrated at everyone, and nighttime made me even more anxious. I would go to sleep and cross my fingers that things would be better just to get 5 full hours. Three cups of coffee was normal. I knew it wasn’t good for anyone.

If you have been struggling with your child’s sleep for a few weeks, or even a few years, it can be fixed! It is so easy to feel too tired to work on it and think you can fix it later, but sometimes later becomes years and it is not good for your own wellbeing to suffer through. Finding peace in your home can be as simple as taking a few weeks to work through it, and it’s like hitting the reset button.

Sleep can be a thing in your household too. Let’s work on it together.
